Rare Bird Sighted - Slaty-Backed Gull (Larus Schistisagus)

Slaty-Backed GullA first-ever sighting for Minnesota and a first-ever summer sighting for the lower 48 sates of a Slaty-Backed Gull was made on Friday, July 21, 2006, at about 6 PM, by Harbor Friends members and volunteers Ken and Molly Hoffman. This outstanding addition to the list of many rare birds sighted in the area of the Grand Marais, Minnesota harbor of Lake Superior was first seen along the East Bay. It was frequenting the East Bay beach between the city owned park near Artists' Point and the East Bay Hotel. The photo below, taken by Harbor Friends member and volunteer Bruce Stahly, shows the Slaty-Backed Gull on the breakwall near the East Bay Hotel on Sunday, July 23, 2006.

In the first few days alone birders from around the state traveled to Grand Marais to enjoy this unique opportunity to view this extremely rare visitor to North America that usually confines itself to North Eastern Siberia and adjacent areas of the Asian Pacific Coast.

More information and an additional photo of this gull and recent sightings of rare birds in Minnesoata can be found on the Minnesota Ornithologists' Union website at: http://moumn.org/cgi-bin/recent.pl.
